True Natural Self Tanner Review: All-Natural Tan That’s Streak-Free?

Like many women, you want a great-looking tan. No doubt a tan looks hot and it can be healthy to a certain degree, but too much sun exposure can leave your skin dried out and accelerate the aging process.

Self-tanners are an obvious choice but they pose a couple of problems. First, many of them look fake and are difficult to apply. Second, the chemical ingredients found in many formulas could pose a real danger to your health when used on a regular basis.

Get an all-natural tan... from a bottle?

Recently I was asked to review an all-natural self tanning product called True Natural All Natural Self Tanner (try saying that 3 times fast!) At first I was a bit hesitant to do the review because I haven’t used a sunless tanner in years and when I did, they didn’t work all that well.

Some of them looked okay, but only if applied perfectly. I usually ended up with funny looking orange streaks and then counted the days until it faded away. But, out of sheer curiosity I agreed to look at this product. I’ll share the details of what I found in my review below…

What’s Different About This Sunless Tanning Lotion?

True Natural describes this self tanner as “anti-aging” and it’s intended for use on both the face and body. This is interesting because many self tanners are designed for one or the other, but not both. The fact that it’s an anti aging product is also a somewhat unique feature.

Anti aging ingredients included in the formula include jojoba oil, aloe vera and green tea extract. They work together to provide hydration and protection against environmental and free radical damage.

No harmful chemicals are included in the all-natural formula that’s also vegan, cruelty-free and gluten-free. It’s safe enough to use every day, although it’s unlikely that you’d want to do this once you achieve your desired color.

The product comes in a small tube containing 3.4 ounces of cream. The cream is rather thick and pure white, similar to a moisturizing lotion for really dry skin but it’s not greasy. It has a fresh lavender sent that’s not overpowering at all. There’s no artificial fragrance, just extract from lavender flowers.

Does True Natural Self Tanner Face & Body Work?

This product promises a radiant, natural-looking tan in under 3 hours. On top of that – it claims to be streak-free. The particular one I tried is designed to give a medium color tan. There’s also a tropical version for darker tans.

According the the Company’s website, after applying the tanning cream, a tan will appear within 3 to 4 hours. A darker tan can be achieved by applying another layer of the product every 3-4 hours until the color is where you want it to be. The tan is supposed to last between 3 and 10 days.

True Natural says its formula works by using a combination of sugars found in fruits and vegetables. These natural sugars react with amino acids located in the skin’s topmost layer. This non-toxic reaction causes the skin to tan.

My Results…

At first I was unsure about how much of the cream I should apply so I only applied a thin layer to one section of my leg. The cream does have a really pleasant smell, just like a naturally scented lotion. It also does a great job of moisturizing the skin. I could immediately tell the difference in hydration between the leg I applied it to and the one I left bare.

As for the color though, I waited and waited and couldn’t really see much of a difference. I had my husband take a look and he couldn’t tell which leg I applied the cream to at all. At this point I was a bit worried that it wasn’t working on my skin. Then I thought maybe I just didn’t apply enough of it – there really wasn’t much guidance in the instructions about how much to use.

If at first you don’t succeed…

I decided to try again and this time applied more than the thin layer I used initially. It was more like the amount of moisturizing lotion I would apply after a shower. This was in the evening, right before dinner. I didn’t pay much attention to my leg the rest of the night but in the morning – wow! I had one big tan patch on my leg which looked pretty silly since the rest of my legs were white.

Of course my next step was to apply it to the rest of my legs to even the color out. I really like this product – the color for me was very natural and there were no streaks at all. Every self tanner claims to have no streaks, but this one is for real. At this point I’m really glad I decided to go ahead with the review because I’ve found a product that I’ll continue using, especially during the warmer months.

True Natural Self Tanner Demonstration

The video below features Marisa demonstrating both the product I tried as well as the tropical version. It gives you a good idea of how natural the tan looks. Pay special attention to how much of the cream she applies to the first arm – I believe that’s about the right amount based on the testing I did.

Note in the video that Marisa switched the products when she came back to show her results. I believe she was confused because of the color intensity achieved… if you notice, she applied much more cream to her first arm and just a small amount to the second arm. Even though it was the tropical formula on the second arm, because she applied less product it came out a bit lighter. Those results are similar to what I described the first time I applied the product – more product equals a deeper tan.

What To Watch Out For

All in all, the True Natural Anti-Aging Self Tanner lives up to its claims. I found it to be streak free and very natural looking. It was also easier to apply than others I’ve used in the past. There was no long waiting period to get dressed after application as the product absorbed very quickly.

One thing to be aware of if you plan to use this product on a regular basis – the container is on the small-side at 3.4 ounces. I covered both my legs and have plenty of cream to spare, but if you want to tan your entire body all year-round, you’ll be buying a few tubes of this. I would estimate that you could get 2, maybe 3 full-body tans from a single tube. If you only use it on your face it will last a lot longer.

Another potential issue is the color of the cream. It’s pure white and since it absorbs quickly, it can be difficult to know exactly how much went on certain areas of your skin. While this is a bit frustrating, it’s not that big of deal since there is no streaking and if you find that a spot was missed it will be easy to fill it in later with no blending issues to worry about.

Finally, it’s important to understand that this is a self-tanner and not a sunscreen. If you’re going to be out in the sun for extended periods of time, you may want to put on a sunscreen product.
