People with sensitive skin often find it difficult to choose skincare products that will not irritate their skin. Sensitive skin reacts quickly to certain products or environmental conditions, such as heat and cold. Some people may have a severe reaction while others may experience only a mild reaction. No matter what level of skin sensitivity you have, it’s important to know how to take care of sensitive skin.

Knowing the right way to care for sensitive skin makes all the difference!1. Cleanse your skin gently. Most bar soaps can dry and irritate skin, so be sure to avoid using them on your face if you have sensitive skin. Plain water does an amazing job but you may want to try a good hypoallergenic facial cleanser. Many experts feel that you should not use water alone for cleansing because it can contain chemicals and minerals that dry the skin. If you have hypersensitive skin, try putting some yogurt (unflavored and full-fat) on your face after cleansing with water. Yogurt contains lactic acid that acts as a mild exfoliant, leaving your skin smooth and fresh.

2. Choose the right skin care products. Sensitive skincare products should be fragrance-free. Fragrance in lotions, creams, moisturizers and other products can irritate sensitive skin. Look for products with ingredients that have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, such as marine plants, avocado, white tea, oats and calendula. Keep in mind that some people may have allergic reactions to herbs and botanicals present in skin care products.

3. Use home remedies to exfoliate sensitive skin. Yogurt seems to be the gentlest exfoliant and is highly recommended when caring for sensitive skin types. Apply a tablespoon of plain, full fat yogurt to your face and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse off gently with cool water. Another natural exfoliant that will not irritate the skin is ground oatmeal mixed with a little water to form a paste. Gently rub the mixture onto the face. For a soothing cleansing action, blend ground oatmeal with yogurt or milk and apply to your face.

4. Protect sensitive skin. Regardless of your skin type, it’s always important to use sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun. Choose a non-comedogenic sunscreen and make sure it is paraben-free and fragrance-free.

5. Watch what you eat. Foods can trigger allergic reactions and cause your skin to breakout. Find out what your food triggers are and be sure to avoid them. You can also add anti-inflammatory spices to your diet such as turmeric, cinnamon and ginger.

6. Do not use hot water to cleanse your skin. Hot water strips the natural oils in your skin, leaving your skin rough and dry. Use cool water instead for washing your face and body. This is also the reason why you should avoid harsh cleansers containing soap, fragrances and sulfates. They strip sensitive skin of natural oils.

7. Avoid the use of petroleum-based products. Mineral oil, paraffin and petrolatum create a barrier on your skin and can clog pores. For proper care, use soothing natural oils such as olive oil or coconut oil.

Sensitive skin care can be challenging because many skincare products contain harsh and potentially hazardous chemicals. Keep your skin soft, smooth and wrinkle-free by choosing organic skin care products that are hypoallergenic.
